Bamboo is popular among environmentally aware consumers since it is an entirely renewable resource. Bamboo multiplies quickly, so harvesting the plant has little environmental impact. Hence, bamboo continues to grow for future harvesting.
However, one crucial aspect often overlooked is moisture resistance. At Woodland Lifestyle, we ensure our products are compliant with the New Zealand building requirements and our Bamboo flooring has passed the Moisture penetration test ISO4760:2022 to ensure it is a viable alternative solution.
An alternative solution refers to part of a building design that shows compliance with the Building Code but differs from the Acceptable Solutions. In 2021 changes were made to the Acceptable Solutions for flooring options in areas of water splash, this included timber-based flooring products.
This has required flooring suppliers like ourselves to provide evidence that our products comply with the requirements as an Alternative solution. Our bamboo flooring has passed the Moisture Penetration Test (ISO4760:2022), providing evidence that it has an impervious surface.
Bamboo flooring is approved for installation in kitchens only. Bathrooms, laundries and other wet area installations are not compliant with the E3/AS1 code.
The Importance of the Moisture Penetration Test
The building code demands a suitable floor structure to minimize excessive moisture and fungal growth in areas such as kitchens, laundry rooms, and bathrooms. According to the E3 Internal moisture clause, Surfaces in wet areas must be impervious, easily cleaned, and have proper ventilation to comply with health and safety regulations.
The ISO4760:2022 Moisture Penetration Test is a rigorous examination that proves no evidence of water penetration through the joints. It tests the impervious surface of the flooring by subjecting it to various moisture conditions. We are happy to report that our bamboo flooring passed the test, indicating that it passes the required level for use as an alternate solution.
Installation Technique
To provide the required impervious surface Bamboo Flooring is installed with Unika Clicseal in areas subject to water splash. Unika Clicseal is applied into the joints of the flooring during installation, refer to our installation guide for further information.
Unika Clicseal is a specially formulated sealer that creates a waterproof barrier and produces an impermeable seal, preventing water from seeping through the joints and causing water damage to your flooring.
