    Project Information
The brief: Converting a garage in a multi-storey building in a residential Auckland area into a music studio
    The problem:

    Location is a residential neighbourhood

Neighbours on either side of garage with the living room of other tenants direct above with a timber mid-floor.

Products used:  PhoneStar and Mineral Wool

As a studio supervisor for SAE and a passionate musician, Aidan Courtnell required a place where he could produce, practice and record music. The plan was to convert his double garage into a live music studio with the help of music student and former builder, Dan.

The main problem they faced was soundproofing the room well enough. The garage was located on the ground floor of a multi-story residence and directly beneath the living room of the upstairs neighbour.

Aidan wanted to be able to use this space for music during all hours of the day and night without disturbing his neighbours, creating the need for exceptional soundproofing. After extensive research into acoustic products available in New Zealand, they realised it was going to be a bigger challenge than they had anticipated to soundproof their room. After consulting with Marshall Day Acoustics (New Zealand), one of the world's largest and most respected acoustic consultancies, they were recommended to try Woodland Lifestyle's soundproofing board, PhoneStar.

PhoneStar is a revolutionary soundproofing board that redefines acoustic control. Engineered with precision in Germany, PhoneStar utilises a combination of loose sand and structured cardboard layers to prevent sound transfer in both residential and commercial spaces. Each board of PhoneStar is only 15mm thick but is acoustically equivalent to adding 60mm of concrete, making it a perfect solution to add mass where space is limited.

Neither Aidan nor Dan had heard of the product PhoneStar before but decided to take a risk after hearing of its impressive acoustic properties. They both found the installation process very straightforward. The boards were screw fixed to the ceiling and walls of the space and any gaps were filled with an acoustic sealant.  As a seasoned carpenter, Dan was impressed by the easy installation process.

"Easy to put up, easy to cut and tape. A sharp knife goes through the boards just like a knife through butter. Can't recommend PhoneStar enough the results just speak for themself, unreal."

After the project was complete, both Aidan and Dan were blown away by the results.
Inside the room, noise levels reached a powerful 100dB as the sound blasted from the guitar stack. Outside the room the guitar was unable to be heard with only ambient noise from the street measuring at 45dB.
